It is wonderful to regard this privately owned picture in terms of private ownership. Memling has shown in lovely detail objects, the rug and vase, of trade with Islam. Crusaders, I believe, introduced the lilies to Europe from southern regions. The bouquet speaks to the New Jerusalem, as for-profit replaced fair trade in the Lowlands. Memling reminds the viewer that symbols of Mary endure and, privately owned, gain in value.
